How to Localize Your SMS Campaigns with Twilio and Dyspatch

How to Localize Your SMS Campaigns with Twilio and Dyspatch
⏱ 3 minute read

Text messages are personal. They show up right next to texts from friends and family, so one in the wrong language doesn't just miss. It reads like spam.

Most teams still localize SMS the hard way: paste copy into a spreadsheet, send it to translators, paste it back, then rebuild it in every tool. It's slow, it's easy to get wrong, and it falls apart the moment the copy changes.

There's a better way. Build the message once in Dyspatch, translate it in a structured workflow, and push every locale to Twilio ready to send.

The Dyspatch SMS Marketing Builder

Why is SMS harder to localize than email?

Email has room to spare. SMS has almost none.

  • Translations run long. German, French, and Spanish copy is often longer than the English source, so a message that fits in English may not fit after translation.
  • Encoding changes the cost. Accented characters and non-Latin scripts switch a message from GSM-7 to Unicode, which drops each segment from 160 characters to 70. The message is the same, but it takes more segments and the bill goes up.
  • Tokens and links break. Personalization fields and URLs have to get through translation untouched.
  • Compliance varies. Opt-out language, quiet hours, and sender rules are different in every country.
  • Tone shifts. Formal or casual? Tu or vous? Each market answers differently.

How does Dyspatch handle SMS localization?

Dyspatch gives SMS the same production workflow teams already use for email.

Build once. Create the master message in the no-code SMS builder, with personalization and conditional logic built in.

Add locales in a click. Name a localization, choose the locale code, and you're done. Teams that translate into the same markets all the time can use Locale Groups to add their whole language set at once.

Translate your way. Sync with Smartling or Phrase, download POT files for your translation vendor, or use Dyspatch’s in-app AI translation service.

Preview every version. Open any localization to see the message in that language, and edit strings inline to fix length or tone on the spot.

Approve before you translate. With two-step localization approval, translation starts only after the source copy is signed off, so nobody translates the copy that's about to change.

How do you get localized messages into Twilio?

Once your localizations are approved, push them to Twilio through Dyspatch's click-and-connect integration. Each locale arrives as a ready-to-send version, so developers never rebuild templates market by market.

Scribe translation

Twilio then handles what it does best: delivery, routing, and reach.

What about RCS?

RCS takes SMS further, adding branding, images, and interactive buttons in the recipient's default messaging app. It's supported on Android and on iOS 18 and later, and carrier coverage keeps expanding.

With Dyspatch, rich messages get the same build, translate, and approve workflow as SMS. There are just more elements to localize, like button labels and card titles.

Best practices for localized SMS

  • Write short source copy so translations have room to grow.
  • Keep variables and URLs out of translatable strings wherever you can.
  • Check the segment count for every locale before you send.
  • Localize the CTA, not just the body.
  • Localize the opt-out language for each market.
  • Test on real devices in every target market.

FAQ

Does translating SMS increase cost?
It can. Characters outside GSM-7 switch the message to Unicode encoding, which shortens each segment and can raise the segment count. Preview every locale before sending.

Which translation tools work with Dyspatch?
Dyspatch integrates directly with Smartling and Phrase and supports POT file workflows for other vendors. You can also translate in the app.

Can I send localized Dyspatch SMS through Twilio?
Yes. Approved localizations push straight to Twilio as ready-to-send templates.

Localization is a workflow problem

Translation isn't the hard part. Managing versions, approvals, and handoffs across every market is. Dyspatch and Twilio give your team one place to build, translate, approve, and ship SMS that speaks your customers' language.
